The HEALTH SYSTEM:

No one resource can promise to tell you all you need to know. But click on the links below and we'll try.

The following main points are worth remembering:

  • If you have a National Insurance Number (NINo) you will be entitled to unlimited free emergency care from the National Health Service (NHS). Even if you have no NINo, even if you should not be in the UK, you will still be given free emergency medical care unless you can pay for it
  • The same is true for your partners and family, and any dependents
  • A private system operates alongside the NHS
  • In emergency only you can dial 999 or 112 for an ambulance. You can also go directly to an Accident & Emergency (A&E) or Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at your local hospital - if it has either of these
  • You can go to your local doctor (a General Practitioner, or GP) at his or her surgery for help
  • There is a system called NHS Direct. Call them on 0845 46 47 at any time (24/7) for help
  • The NHS also provides dentists to help with problems with your teeth
  • Special clinics run by the NHS also deal with drug and sexual problems
  • If you have serious problems and need somebody to talk with and give you advice, or just somebody to listen to you, then we have a service called the Samaritans. They work over the telephone
  • The NHS will provide translators and / or interpreters if they are needed
